Jethro Tull One of the the longest U.K. surviving bands, With their debut album in 1968 (this was) and their performance at the Rolling Stones Rock'n roll circus , and their performances at the royal albert hall and the Festival Island of whigt, they were a unique phenomenon in music history. Their music is a mix of rock with folk melodies symphonic rock, blues songs. with several shifts in musical styles and line-ups they are still going strong. Sold many copies of the classic albums like This was / Benefit /Stand up/ Aqualung/ Thick as a brick / Living in the past / A passion play / Songs from the wood and more. Frontman Ian Anderson Born in 1947 Edinburgh Scotland had his roots in the British blues boom. The first band was called the Blades and made a mix of Jazz and blues. In 1965 they changed their name into John Evan band later they went to London and tried several names until finally they changed their name into Jethro Tull , Tony Iomi from Black Sabbath was in the group for a very short period before they recorded This was with chrysalis records in 1968. They peformed at their first rock festival at Hyde park and the Sunbury jazz and blues festival. and Newport. The song Living in the past reached U.K. charts at no.3. Bourree reached no.1 and witches promise no.4.  With benefit and the following albums they became more popular even in the U.S. With Aqualung the album reached no.4 in the U.K. and no.7 in the States. And was followed up by a successful tour. followed up by the more ambitious album Thick as a brick which reached no.5 in the U.S. they played the Carnegie hall. The album a passion play 1973 was even more complexed and dipite the criticism of the lenghth of the album and the lyrics it reached n0.1 in the U.S.A. and no.14 in England. In 1974 was the release of the album warchild and was the last big success in the States. 1975 Minstrell in the gallery was more electric rock and still reached no.7 in the U.S. but it's success was more limmited. followed up by the album too old to rock and roll and too young to die in 1976. The release of Songs from the wood in 1977 was a greater success, an artistically and more folk album. With the release of heavy horses and the first official live album Bursting out they gained modest success. Because of the punk movement in the U.K. Music was changing Tull was changing. Although with the good album stormwatch (more rock album)they again had modest success followed up by an album called A. The album I think had not the quality of Stormwatch. After Ian's solo album they went on with the broadsworth and the beast and under wraps more hardrock with folk melodies and sythesizers. Later with the release a little light music 1992 (live album ) and roots to branches 1995 they were back and still going strong . And the release of Ian's secret language of birds with great folk melodies. They are still a great live band. One of the longest surviving U.K. bands.
